From Father Greg

Dear Friends,

The community that the Gospel of Matthew was written for had lots of contentions, lots of not getting along with each other. The Gospel of Matthew also has “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” I grew up with the idea we just need to forgive and move on. Then I read a book by Dennis Linn, Matthew Linn and Sheila Fabricant Linn entitled Don’t Forgive Too Soon.

Matthew’s Gospel we read this past weekend (Matt 18:15-20) gives us steps to follow if someone sins against you. First is to go to that person and have a dialogue one-on-one. Don’t jump to forgiveness, maybe there are some other things that need to be done to have a better relationship-if possible. If communication isn’t working, involve others. This could be counseling, an attorney, or police. Try to make amends and set boundaries so the hurt doesn’t recur.

Don’t hang onto your resentments. The 18th Chapter of Matthew is preparing us for the reign of God. Let us pray that we can be a reconciling community.

Peace,
Fr. Greg

Helpful Resources

As parishioners of St. Genevieve, we commit ourselves to refresh our participation of Liturgy through attentive listening to God's Word, in raising our voices in prayer and song, and in reverent reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. We pledge to work for justice for those inside and outside of our boundaries and to be instruments of healing in our families and in our community.
